The Rector of St Mary's,
Archdeacon Sue Jacka
Sue first experienced God's call when she was very young. A missionary on furlough in her home parish in Melbourne made a big impression.
Sue has a background in secondary teaching and has been called to significant periods of ministry across her working life. After teaching for three years, she worked with Scripture Union in their Theos Youth Outreach as well as in a grassroots organisation ‘Hotham Christian Community’ in the North Melbourne public housing estate. In this period, she studied for her Bachelor of Theology while living in intentional Christian community.
Another time of teaching at the very pastoral Kensington Community High School followed, before the family moved to Gippsland. Sue taught at Mirboo North Secondary College where she was a lay reader, led a youth group and a Bible study in the Mirboo North parish.
God’s call to ordination was persistent and in 2004, Sue undertook further studies in Theology and CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) while also completing a field placement at St Mary's Morwell under Heather Marten.
Sue was appointed Chaplain at Gippsland Grammar in 2005 and worked as an associate minister at St Paul's cathedral, Sale. In 2009, she was appointed as rector of the Trafalgar parish. After serving as the Dean of the western region for some years, Sue was appointed archdeacon in September 2018.
Sue is married to Ross, an artist, and together they have four adult children, three of whom have partners. Sue and Ross find joy in family gatherings and looking after their three grandchildren.
Sue is passionate about social justice and the need to care for the environment (including growing and preserving many of their own organic fruits and vegetables at their small acreage in Mirboo.) She enjoys creating textiles of various types, reading, staying fit and speaking French. She is wholehearted about walking with people as they encounter the love of God and is energised by thoughtful conversations.
